History begins with swords . This is the first bronze production in human history. So it’s hard to say exactly when these weapons came onto the scene- they have always been there as long as humans have wielded tools or hunted animals. As the oldest known bronze production is from the Chinese Yangshao culture around 4500 BCE, most sabers of this period were made with copper and tin. The Mesopotamians were also versed in metallurgy, and were producing copper swords by 3500 BCE. A saber of this time was most likely a utility knife rather than a weapon of war. Many have been found with bone handles and beautiful carvings. An example is the Saber of Goujian which has a handle made of fish-trunk covered with thin bronze plates, with wrapped silk cords, woven bamboo slabs, and tortoiseshell where attached to the hilt.
